wild thang

so i did just post these on facebook, but this was afterall, one huge craft project so i wanted to blog about it.
i knew i wanted to be a girl max since....maybe summer? i had it in my head and i wasn't sure exactly how i would pull it off, but i knew i would.
to me that's the best part about halloween! i love to come up with something kinda ambitious and then figure out how i'm going to pull it off. that's fun part. plus, you get to be creative, not spend a lot of money, and have a costume that no one else will.


justine crochets these little hats with ears, so i knew i could use that. i also knew that i had white tights and i bought the white fingerless gloves from h&m. so that was what i started with.

basically i went to joanne's like 2 days ago and found some pretty cheap, furry fabric. i also got a wooden stick, a styrofoam ball, and some gold spray paint because i knew i wanted a scepter. oh and a scrap of felt for the claws.

i made the skirt, which was easy. the top, i knew i wanted to be heart-shaped, so i just kind of played it by ear, cutting and adding darts. the fabric was actually really easy to work with! i didn't need to hem any of the edges or anything. my mom helped me put a zipper in the top.

made some feets. they're basically just little covers that slip-on over my shoes with elastic.

i ended up sewing bigger ears on the hood and added some wire whiskers.
when i went to make the tail i realized that max's tail is brown!! i really had to think it out and searched my house for something brown i could use. i also considered buying more fabric. then i realized that i had that copper spray paint, so i just painted it and it really worked out!
i also painted the scepter and added some little foil details. for my crown, i just wrapped some paper with foil and spray painted that too.
i just love kinda making everything up like that. it was a lot of work and many hours, but a lot of fun too.



so i wore it last night and got a couple comments about how i picked the most "indie" costume or that max was overrated or whatever. but i don't think so! sure there are a lot more max costumes than i thought there would be, but i decided to do my own version of it that was more "me." when i told people my idea months ago-about the dress and being a girl version-i got a lot of doubts and questioning whether people would be able to tell what i was without having the onesie.
i think it worked out pretty well and you can tell what it is.

i loved the book as a child and i really loved the movie. i figured it's all about imagination anyway, so i used mine to make this costume.

these are mostly from around my house. i usually just leave my camera laying around for moments when i see something i find inspiring.

some were a little too overexposed; i still don't really know what i'm doing haha. but some came out with imperfections that i absolutely love! i find film soo exciting because you never know how it's going to turn out and sometimes little quirks or mistakes make them even better.

so i know there is more to life than material things, but i happen to like these things and i like the materials they are made out of too.

my mom found the kitty purse in the kiddy section as a gift for my little cousin. when she brought it home of course i freaked out and had to get one for justine and i (and make sure that hanie got one too). they are perfect for makeup and whatnot.

so i haven't posted in a while!
we've been recording our e.p. and we went up to san francisco for a weekend for the treasure island festival. grizzly bear was the besssstt! so great.

i have two rolls of film i need to develop and i realized that i haven't made anything in a long time collage-wise. i have so many old books, photos, papers that i've been collecting and they're all just waiting to be made into stuff. it's been too long! so hopefully very soon i will make the time to make something.

anyway, i'll leave you with these until then:

late-night recording

today i heard feist's orginal version of "mushaboom" (i had only heard the version with postal service) and really liked it, so i learned it.

decided to record it just now; it's very rough.
the more i listen to it, the more i hate it. haha. i can easily get into perfection mode, but sometimes it's best to just do it in one take, so i did.

i really shouldn't be singing because i'm sick and i have to save my voice for tomorrow (we're recording for summer twins) but i had fun.

i stayed home sick today and it's pretty nice to be able to lay in bed with my laptop, so i thought i'd update.


i had been wanting a denim skirt, so when i found one at h&m that was made out of fake denim, i tried it on and it was too big. i was tempted to get it and sew it, but i figured that one would come in deelux. sure enough, the next day a real denim skirt came in!


i also got this vintage bathing suit at deelux and wore it this summer as a romper. since it's plaid i figured there had to be a way to wear it this fall...




i came across this lovely lady's outfit and was inspired. this is a great idea for transforming a romper into a warmer, autumn version...

today i also discovered louis wain (5 August 1860 – July 4, 1939)...king of cats!
he is known for his cat art, which apparently became wilder as he was diagnosed with schizophrenia later in his life. i read a blog post, however, that talked about how he is too-often associated with schizophrenia, rather than the art and work he did for cats:

"Louis often gave lectures on the welfare of cats and encouraged people to take in stray cats, not just purebred cats. Louis Wain was elected as President and Chairman of the National Cat Club..."

she also talks about how his mother worked with eastern indian textiles, which was probably also a factor in his crazy patterns.

i saw zombieland last night. it was soo good! i would definitely recommend.
i am also listening to tobacco, the solo project of one of the guys from black moth super rainbow, which i would also recommend.

i am really enjoying this lovely riverside weather and i hope it STAYS like this!
